Personal Nursing Philosophy Statement

My nursing philosophical belief is centred on the fact that health is co-produced between nurse and patient. I feel that more courage in speaking up is crucial, as well as actively listening to a patient’s story to involve them in care decision-making. The values which guide my practice include patient safety and dignity, accountability, integrity, equity, evidence-based practice, and fairness in care. Nurses have key responsibilities in terms of direct patient care, team collaboration in clinical settings during medication administration, and patient education in home-based care settings (Fabry et al., 2024). Through patient education, lifestyle suggestions, and health advocacy, nurses promote the health and well-being of the patient across their lifespan.

Clinical placements, teamwork in acute wards, technical knowledge, and perioperative experience have inspired me to choose nursing as a profession. Further, the aspect that keeps me committed to this profession is the meaningful human connection developed by providing care to a person and promoting their lifelong wellness. My nursing philosophy aligns with the NMBA Code of Conduct, where I believe in adhering to clinical ethics and professional accountability for my own actions and clinical decisions. Furthermore, I refer to NMBA guidelines to approach patient-centred care and continuous professional development.

Professional Practice Reflection

(Guided by Johns Model of Reflection)

Description of Experience

The scenario was about providing palliative care to the patient where I have observed theatre nurses doing their work with precision, vigilance and teamwork. I was very excited because I have never been to such acute setting where theatre nurses works as a team to provide support to patient before, during and after the surgery in both operation theatre and ward setting (Nijkamp et al, 2024). I had a positive reaction about this type of care approach that provided support to patient as well as help nurses to develop diverse knowledge by working with surgical team.

Reflection on Influencing Factors

My values and emotions for patient safety, accountability and integrity has influenced me to act in that way to observe team collaboration of theatre nurses. External factors like team dynamics has influenced me to observe the way surgical team collaborates and proceed with errorless treatment to ensure safety of patient within and outside of ICU. I had assumption which is going in my mind is related to preconception of aggressiveness of surgical team within ICU, however, after observing the case I have understood that it’s not aggressiveness its precision that helps teams to work together and provide support to patient.

Knowledge & Theory Integration

I have applied critical thinking and analysis in nursing practice by providing palliative care to patient. Where I have accessed and used evidence based research to provide culturally safe care to my patient, where I have used effective communication to engage patient in conversation to craft detailed care plan. To me nursing practice is more about promoting better health for the patient it aligns with Theory of Human caring. This theory helps me in proceeding with holistic approach to healthcare in providing quality care to patient by respecting all their personal beliefs and values (Nurseslabs, 2024).

Giving voice to values (GVV) framework has guided me to effectively act on my own values and ethical principles to make decisions (CFA institute, 2025). For instance my values safety and patient dignity has enabled me to develop therapeutic relation with patient that has empowered patient to involve within care decision process. These theories and framework has informed my action in making responsive decision across patient’s life. Human caring theory has assisted me to provide care that is centralised to patient by understanding their values to guide own actions. Further, GVV framework has assisted me in applying my values while providing culturally safe care to patient.

Students exploring evidence-based clinical decisions, nursing theories and patient-centred care can also help with Evidence Based Nursing Assignment for relevant academic guidance.

Ethical and Multiple Perspectives

In my case patient autonomy has been maintained through open communication where I have presented all details about care to patient and have actively listened to their concerns and beliefs. Further I have sought informed consent by providing all details to patient and their family members by following organisational policies and healthcare regulations. To understand cultural aspect I have focused on cultivating positive atmosphere that has encouraged patient to speak about their cultural values and beliefs without any fear. Thus helped me in tailoring care plan by aligning with patient’s cultural aspect. Patient’s family members were involved because patient was facing problem in expressing own views over care plan. Therefore, collaborative effort with patient’s family members has helped in preparing culturally safe care plan for the patient (Walker and Wilson, 2025).

The ethical dilemma I have faced between safety and patient privacy principles, I was in a midst to provide safety to patient but at the same time I need to discuss patient’s details to other professional for preparing comprehensive care plan for patient. My reasoning to this problem entails about my decision to have depth conversation with patient and their family members. This conversation has helped me to make them understood about involving professional for better treatment approach.

Learning and Personal Development

This experience has contributed towards my knowledge development in team work skills, ethical principles that guides evidence based nursing practice. I have also learned that effective communication skill helps in building therapeutic relationship which is essential for patient centred care approach. My self-awareness as supported me in providing culturally safe care to patient, while my communication strength has helped me to obtain informed consent from patient. However, I also need to work on my critical thinking ability to resolve problems in prompt manner. Observing theatre nursing has changed my current individual care approach, where in future I will try to more collaborate with other teams to provide integrated care to patient.

Action Plan

I will work with different healthcare professionals to develop cultural competency and to learn by their experience to deal with different patient. Further, I will attend workshop managed by health practitioners to develop hands on practice in nursing to improvise patient’s outcomes. I will also develop my digital literacy to utilise tools that enhances clinical decision making.

Professional Development Goals

My professional areas of interest belongs to peri-operative nursing field because I am strongly drawn to theatre nursing.
