One of the commonly used materials in current multi-story building construction is reinforced concrete, due to its strength, flexibility, and resistance to both compressive and tensile forces, particularly when reinforced with steel. It offers structural ability to stand up to wide spans and load upwards and vertical forces as well as long-term performance to health conditions that differ with time. Beams and slabs are the basic elements of the transfer of loads in such a system (Huang  et al., 2022). Slabs are used as horizontal plates and carry loads imposed by occupants, finishes, and equipment and direct the loads to mission columns and foundations, which hold the structure together at every point in the grid. Safe and efficient layout of such members is thus architecturally necessary to the stability of the whole building. Meanwhile, concrete mix composition and conformity to applicable design standards, e.g. AS3600 and AS1170, play a key role in assuring strength, durability, serviceability, and safety during the lifespan of the intended use of the structure.

1.2 Project Overview – Zone Z Allocation

It is the project of a 6-story reinforced concrete building having numerous functions at various levels. Based on the structure, the ground floor is a car parking space; the first, second, and then up to the fourth floor will be offices, and the fifth floor will be services (Rabi et al. 2022). Elements embedded in all levels must suit the purpose in which they are applied where they should be safe and sound as well as efficient.

The report concentrates on one of the 5th-floor Zone Z that has a total of several functional areas, i.e., the Service Room, Corridor, Stairwell, Steam Room, Jacuzzi, and Kids Room. These areas pose special design considerations especially the Jacuzzi which induce huge supplementary water storage pressures which must be factored in the layout of the slab and beam. The consideration of these requirements will ensure that the recognition is compliant with the Australian Standards as well as the practical performance expectations.

1.3 Objectives of the Project

The main goal of the project is to show the competence of designing reinforced concrete structural members as outlined by the clauses of AS3600. It is concentrated on Zone Z of the 5th floor, where the analysis and design of a continuous RC beam on Axis 4 and slab panel across gridline 3-5 and A-H are done (Wang et al. 2021). The design process is intended to assure the safety, strength, service and durability of these members in the anticipated loading conditions. Also, the use of principles in the concrete mix design, load estimation, and structural analysis is applicable to the project to reflect practical and code-compliant solutions that can be offered and applied in real life.

1.4 Scope of the Design

This project scope focuses on the structural design of two main reinforced concrete components at the 5th floor of a zone (Zone Z) and includes a continuous T-beam on Axis 4 and a two-way slab panel spanning gridlines 3-5 and cells A-H. These members are very important in distributing loads on the areas above to the system that is supporting below. Its design is oriented towards strength and stability, and the AS3600 standards.

The basic features of the columns and footings are not part of the basic scope; however, they could be taken as elective items that are related to contextual knowledge (Gruyter, 2025). Concrete mix design N32 grade prepared by applying the American Volumetric Method is also included in the project to maintain the right compressive strength, serviceability, and durability of the building in its service conditions.

One of the main areas of the scope is load determination. The design takes into account the dead loads; self-weight of slabs, beams, finishes and partitions; live loads; classifying the occupancies of individual rooms, and special loads; the heavy water storage pressures of the Jacuzzi. The scope allows the building to achieve structural safety and serviceability criteria across the lifespan of the building, particularly with regard to handling diverse load effects on the beam and slab.

1.5 Design Methodology

The design procedure incorporates material proportioning, structural assumptions, load estimating and step-by-step structural analysis to ensure secure and resilient reinforced concrete components. It is initiated by that of N32 grade concrete mix design on the basis of the American Volumetric Method certain to maintain the demands of strength, durability, etc (Ellobody, 2023). Workability, strength, and serviceability are balanced by combining parameters that include water cement ratio (0.41), maximum aggregate size (25 mm sub-angular crushed stone), required slump (75 mm) and air content (non-air-entrained).

As per AS3600, structural assumptions are made such as the span-to-depth ratios to limit deflection, exposure category A1 (indoor environment), and the concrete cover size of 20 mm made to cover the reinforcement. These assumptions will guarantee sustainability and sustainability in performance in Zone Z.

Estimation of loads is based on AS1170, including dead loads due to self-weight and finishes, live loads due to occupancy types (corridor, service room, kids room, steam room) and special loads (Jacuzzi water pressure) (Pan & Zhang, 2023). Load combinations are identified to strength and serviceability limit states.

The continuous T-beam and two-way slab panel are analysed structurally by computing shear forces, some bending moments, and some deflections. AS3600 streamlined design process is used to dimension reinforcement, to check serviceability and prepare reinforcement detailing so that the completed design contains no code, and is usable in the field.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is therefore part of closing the gap between academic theory and practical hardships imposed by structural design on a consultancy basis. It targets peculiar problems of the 5th Zone Z, i.e. the hydrostatic load of the water in the Jacuzzi and higher live loading in corridors by taking into account the aspects of the strength and serviceability. The project raises the technical capability of implementing AS1170 and AS3600, which are industry-concerned standards (Kovalov et al. 2022). Besides, it offers an additional boost to the concrete mix design, structural analysis, and reinforcement detailing interaction, which will qualify the student to work professionally in the engineering area where safety, efficiency, and reliability are an indispensable environment.
